A Struggle With Time

Time is a fascinating thing. Don’t you think? It’s amazing that a 30 second elevator ride feels WAAAAY longer than it is, and yet when I play a video game and finish one mission or campaign, real-time hours have gone by and it only felt like 15 minutes.

HOW is this possible?!

Time moves at the same rate for everyone, everywhere, and we all have the same amount given to us each day. Time flies by, or at times, stands still.

At least, that’s what it feels like depending on what I am doing.

One Gamer’s Week

As a marketer for a game company, I work 40 hours a week, commute way too many hours, and I spend hours on eating, doing house chores (if my amazing husband hasn’t already tackled them, he’s Mr. Incredible that way), and enjoying time with my family. Weekends are reserved for friends and extended family, running errands and possibly catching up on a movie or baking a new British baked treat.

But there is NEVER enough time to do all things I want. Do you struggle with this? As a highly motivated creative person, I have a number of things on my wish-list of to-do items. Things like put puzzles together, arts and crafts, watch “me” movies, read books, make videos, and above all, play VIDEO GAMES. Sadly, after the top priorities are addressed or accomplished, I never seem to have enough time to get to my bonus tasks. My “fun times”.

So I have options:

  1. Continue making my responsibilities #1 (hey – my kid needs to eat and I need an adequate amount of sleep).
  2. Choose one bonus fun thing, and little by little make time for it in a week until it is finished.
  3. Wake up early. Like, before my son wakes up. Problem is, I’m not a morning person. I’m a Zombie.

I can also have two different attitudes towards this struggle for time. I can be bitter and complain, becoming upset when the time runs out and I cannot reach my goal. OR I can have grace for myself, and remind myself to be selfless. There are other people who need me more than the need is to play a round of Star Wars Battlefront.

(I mean Star Wars: Battlefront 2 from WAAY back when. I never finished the entire campaign.)

For this year in 2020, I’m aiming to have more grace for myself. I will aim to go to bed earlier, and wake up earlier (at least one day a week) in order to accomplish a single goal of “me time”.

Share with me! What are your tips and tricks for making more time for things? And which games do you like to return to?
