To quote the game description from HeR Interactive, here’s what the mystery game is about;
The Search is on for an Unearthly Artifact in New Orleans!
Bruno Bolet was the proud owner of the “Whisperer,” a crystal skull rumored to protect its holder from almost any cause of death – except murder. When Bruno passed away, his nephew Henry came to wrap up his affairs, but he couldn’t find the skull among the clutter of the creepy Bolet manor. You’ll need to team up with Nancy’s best friend Bess Marvin to find this mystical artifact before it falls into the wrong hands in Nancy Drew: Legend of the Crystal Skull!

This game was built on a proprietary engine internally, by HeR Interactive. It is loosely inspired by the book Mardi Gras Mystery.
Set in the French Quarter of New Orleans, and at a private property just outside the city, Nancy visits Henry Bolet, a friend of Ned Nickerson. Henry’s guardian had recently passed away and Ned is concerned for him. When Nancy arrives at the house, she discovers the door is open and finds a costumed intruder in the living room. The masked figure knocks out Nancy and she awakens later. She suspects something more is going on when she learns of the previous owner’s legend of a prized possession. Could someone be after Bruno Bolet’s inheritance or valuable possessions? Who was the masked figure?
This mystery game is very puzzle-heavy, but also is exploratory. The entire game takes place in one evening on a rainy night. Bess Marvin is located at the hotel in the French Quarter, and the player phone calls her in order to switch playable characters and to continue investigations in the city while Nancy is stuck at the house due to the weather.

This game was also localized (translated) into French and German.
This was the first Nancy Drew game to have a fun trivia question at the end.
